In eastern Pello, around 90 km from Rovaniemi, you’ll find a unique ski trail of about 7 km (one way) that remains a true skier’s delight—even during the low-snow period at the end of winter. This beautiful stretch of Lappish fell landscape runs between the Ritavalkea ski centre and Salmilompolo, and can be skied in both directions. Thanks to its higher elevation, snow conditions here are often more reliable and better maintained than on many other trails at similar latitudes across Lapland. The surrounding fell tops and tall trees also provide natural shelter, protecting the tracks from the warming effects of the afternoon sun. Access is easy: simply park at the Ritavalkea car park and set off on skis towards Sampilompolo.

Generally talking Pello appeals to both demanding fitness skiers and weekend enthusiasts, with an extensive trail network suited to all ability levels. It offers a more peaceful nature experience compared to neighbouring destinations such as Rovaniemi or Ylläs, along with more affordable accommodation options.
